In the small town of Robertson, 170km outside Cape Town is a cactus farm called Sheilam Cactus and Succulent Nursery. For those who love these prehistoric, low maintenance plants, the farm is a gem. Sheilam opened in 1954 and is owned-managed today by the Schwegmann family.

Stroll through the nursery- a fine collection of around 2000 cacti and succulent specimens of all shapes, sizes and colours with weird and wonderful characteristics and peculiar names like The Old Man of Peru, Mother-in-Law’s-Chair (if you really don’t love your MIL 😅), Horses’ Teeth and Bushman’s Grape. Factor in a visit if you’re in this beautiful part of the world. You can take a tour or do some shopping or just admire the prickly beauty. Either way, shop for  If you’re headed that way, make a turn in McGregor, a charming village 20 minutes from Roberston where I have a cottage.
